We are excited that you have chosen to include Journey Through Jewish American History as part of your
curriculum for Jewish American Heritage Month (May 2025).
This 4-session recorded course will offer your students a meaningful exploration of the rich history,
contributions, and experiences of American Jewry.

Course Overview:

Each sessionย covers key moments and themes in Jewish Americanย history and is best
when watched in sequence. Each session will include a mix of presentations, maps, short readings suggestions,
ย and multimedia materials to engageย participants and deepen their understanding of the rich and diverse
history of Jews in America.ย  Attendees will also be encouraged to share their insights, experiences, and questionsย throughout the course.โ€ฏ

Session 1

Arrival and Settlement (15 minutes)โ€ฏ

  • Overview of the early Jewishย presence in colonial Americaโ€ฏ.
  • Examination of Jewish contributionsย to colonial societyโ€ฏ.
  • Key figures and events in the earlyย Jewish American experienceโ€ฏ.
  • The push-and-pull factor of Jewishย immigration to America.

Session 2

Assimilation andย Community Building (16 minutes)โ€ฏ

  • Exploration of the development ofย Jewish communities in urbanย centers.
  • Overview of Jewish cultural,ย religious, and communal life in theย 19th centuryโ€ฏ.
  • Theย evolution of immigration:ย Bostonโ€™s Jewish Quarter, NYโ€™sย Lower East Side.
  • The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.

Session 3

Challenges and Achievementsย in the 20th Century (22 minutes)โ€ฏ

  • Examination of the tension andย racism between assimilation andย cultural preservationโ€ฏ.
  • Antisemitism 1898-1941.
  • Refugee challenges on the brink ofย war in America and in Europe.
  • Analysis of the rise of Jewishย religious movements andย denominationsโ€ฏ.

Session 4

Contemporary Issues andย Future Directionsย 
(17 minutes)โ€ฏ

  • The evolution of the Jewishย American identity
  • Overview of Jewish contributionsย to American culture, arts, andย sciencesโ€ฏ.
  • Antisemitism and the tragedies ofย the 21st Century: Charlottesville,ย Tree of Life, Blaze Bernstein.
  • Post October 7th โ€“ challenges withย universities and social media.
