Israel Through Arts and Culture

Professional course for educators for use in the classrooms: Educators will acquire tools of how-to bring Israel to their classrooms, through arts and culture, using it as a vehicle for exploring vibrant vision of Israel.
Todayโ€™s Israel is a vibrant kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, tastes, ideas, people, and cultures. Often, when teaching Israel, we focus on facts and events, ignoring the dynamic and intense life that is lived there. By engaging with the world of arts and culture, however, we are presented with an ideal vehicle for exploring a vibrant vision of Israel.

Arts and culture provide a reflection of the heart of the people and the pulse of society; they bring to the surface themes and ideas that may not find expression in other ways.

To familiarize learners with Israeli history, society, and aspirations, we take our cues for this series from various media forms. All sessions are accompanied by educational materials that can be used with learners in a classroom setting.

1.Poster Tales โ€“ Independence Day Posters, which were designed, printed and displayed in public spaces throughout the years are an esthetic and historic timeline that tell many stories.

2. Eurovision Songs โ€“ What historical context is hidden behind the choices of the songs sent to the competition, who won and when, and other fascinating details.

3. Poetry – The banknotes of the New Shekel carry the portraits of outstanding Hebrew poets, two of them women, whose poetry, life stories, works, and activities are intertwined with the story of the rebirth of the Nation of Israel in its land. We will examine four poems in Hebrew with English translation that reflects on their connection to the land of Israel.
