Holocaust – The Life and Word of Anne Frank- 4th-6th grade
The Frank Family / The Van Pels Family.
In this first class, we will meet the inhabitants of the Secret Annex: each member of the Frank family, the Van Pels family, and Dr. Fritz Pfeffer.
The History and The World Outside.
Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, which the Frank family had called home for centuries.
The family must move from their beloved home to Amsterdam, Holland, where they will be free from persecution, or so they think.
The Diary and the Hiding Place. In this class, we will discuss Anne’s famous diary and take a virtual tour of the Secret Annex in Amsterdam, where the families spent over 2 years in hiding.
The Helpers and the Righteous.
The focus is on the people who made survival in hiding possible- Miep Gies, Jan Gies, Victor Kugler, and Johannes Kleiman.

Why we study the Holocaust?
“The Holocaust began slowly. Age-old prejudice led to discrimination; discrimination to persecution; persecution to incarceration; incarceration to annihilation. And mass murder, which culminated with the killing of six million Jews, did not begin with the Jews nor did it encompass only the Jews. The violation of one group’s rights are seldom contained only to that group. …Yet the study of these deaths is in the service of life.
To study this evil is to strengthen decency and goodness.”

ALWAYS take the time to discuss definitions and establish what you are talking about, i.e. the Holocaust, Nazis, Genocide, etc.

Ground Rules:
ABSOLUTELY NO SIMULATIONS, SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS, OR ANY TYPE OF “US AND THEM” SITUATION.
Stay away from terms like bystander and upstander.
SAFE IN, SAFE OUT
NEVER put your students in a position where they must imagine themselves in a particular situation or time, or as an actor in the timeline. It is not fair to them, nor is it practical.
