“Love in a Postcard”; the Holocaust survival story of Rita Berwald (Rimalower-Nettler) a Kindertransport child 4th-6th Grade

Ahead of Holocaust International Remembrance Day, that will be observed in January, we invite you to participate in this program that was curated specifically for younger ages.
“Love in a Postcard” is a Holocaust course based on a special curriculum designed for 4th-8th grade students using “Love in a Postcard”, a new children play that tells the true story of Rita Rimalower, a girl from Leipzig, Germany, who was saved by the Kindertransport rescue mission. Michele Gold, Rita’s daughter, will join Anat Sadan, in teaching this class. The students will be acting out scenes from the play while learning Holocaust topics: Jewish life before the Holocaust and the events, from 1933, that led to the rescue of approximately 10,000 children from Europe, from December 1, 1938, to September 1, 1939.

In addition, we will read some of Rita’s postcards and discuss Rita’s relationship with her parents and how she felt after separating from them not knowing if she would ever see them again. The students will examine different stories of survival and resistance during this period including spiritual resistance, Righteous Among the Nations (gentiles who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust), uprisings, revolts, the partisans, and much more. The materials for this class are age appropriate.
